Fall Property Maintenance Checklist

Now that fall is here, it’s time to get your home’s property ready and prepared to handle the harsh winter that’s on its way.

Here’s a list of the most important tasks to cross off your property maintenance to-do list this fall season:

Clean The Gutters

Gutters serve an important function in protecting your home; they safely collect and drain water off your roof and away from your home’s foundation. Clogs in your house’s gutter system can lead to serious and costly damages, so cleaning them regularly is essential.

During the fall, leaves and debris will likely accumulate throughout the gutters and downspouts, making it the ideal time to clean them out, especially since they will be working harder once winter snow arrives. Hire a professional to help you with the task or get the job done yourself; just make sure you have someone to help you and hold the ladder.

Leaf Cleanup

Cleaning up all the leaves and debris that have fallen onto your property is no easy task, but it is an important one. Letting those remains pile up creates a barrier between your lawn and the elements, meaning they won’t be able to get the necessary nutrients needed to grow and thrive once spring rolls back around. Also, there is a higher risk of your grass becoming diseased from the increased moisture trapped under the leaf piles. If it’s too much work, don’t hesitate to hire a professional team to get the job done for you.

Care For Your Lawn

Now that the leaves are picked up, if you want your lawn to grow and flourish when spring returns, fall is the best time to give it some extra TLC. Continue watering the grass regularly to ensure it can stay strong ahead of the freezing weather.

Fall is also a great time to fertilize and aerate your lawn! Fertilizer offers extra nutrients and energy to the grass and aerating involves making holes in the soil to relieve compaction and allow nutrients to penetrate down into the roots.

Winterize Your Exterior Water System

Once the ground starts freezing and your grass no longer needs to be watered, it’s time to protect your hoses and pipes. Drain any garden hoses completely and pack them away; otherwise, they will likely split and need replacement. Blasting the water out with an air compressor is an easy trick to ensure all the H2O is out. Shut down the external water supply and check that your sprinkler system is also properly turned off and secured away.

Repair Your Walkways

Winter can be harsh and lead to damages across your property, so it’s best to ensure any issues are fixed ahead of the snow’s arrival. Check your walkways, driveways, and steps for any cracks, holes, or problems; these issues are dangerous all year-round but are made worse when they are icy and wet. Cracks in the pavement will only worsen once winter snow arrives, as the water melting and refreezing will cause them to break down. Don’t put off these projects any longer.
